KINGSWAY & THE GREAT OUTDOORS
Paul Roberts

Greetings music fans.

I was chatting with RC a little while back in the kitchen at EVES while he was washing dishes. That’s his major contribution to the studio – washing the dishes. Don’t get me wrong, I love the kid. He’s just not an earner. “Verse, chorus, verse, chorus,” I always have to say to him. Let’s move some units. Does he listen? No. He writes an 8 minute song called Alaska that has absolutely nothing to do with fishing or hunting or Northern Exposure or Sarah Palin or snow. Whatever. At least there’s always clean glasses.

Anyway, he was washing dishes and telling me that his new album was going to be a “concept album about/love letter to” his old apartment building, The Belvedere Court at 10th and Main in Vancouver. I said that sounded “commercially suicidal/a little bit gay”. He got all huffy and left. Called me a homophobe on his way out the door. He’s not even gay. Anyway, he didn’t come around for about a week. We ran out of clean scotch glasses so I called him up and told him he could make his record. Glad I like scotch so much, ’cause it turned out to be a pretty good album.

Shine on you crazy diamonds.

KINGSWAY is a small community of musicians led by West Coast singer/songwriter RC Joseph.

After four albums of critically acclaimed music, Joseph is more confident than ever that one of his better-looking and more talented counterparts will someday cover one of his songs and place it on their major label release. Perhaps around track 6 or 7. Though the song itself won’t do too well, the album will reach the top 10 on Billboard and Joseph will use his residuals to buy a kidney-shaped pool and a fancy gas barbeque. Such are the dreams of the true artist.

“A series of melancholy lo-fi folk songs that conjure up images of a young Neil Young or perhaps the male equivalent of Chan Marshall. RC Joseph bares his soul with little more than his voice, his guitar and a heart full of woe.” – ChartAttack

“The latest from Vancouver’s RC Joseph casts a wondering eye at the night sky, scene of cosmic real-estate sales, alien visitations and other dreams of relief from this weary world. The shuffling songs are deliberately plain and low-tech, with lots of head-down guitar strumming and occasional trumpet asides. Joseph’s damaged vocals emphasize the remoteness of his subjects, and also their inescapability, as the star-chart traces of all-too-human relationships.” – Globe and Mail

“With a debut that was perhaps one of the best in recent Canadian indie history, it seems unlikely that Kingsway could continue to get better with each release, but somehow they do. Brand New Golden Oldies is Kingsway’s finest work yet… RC Joseph might just be the best lyricist in Canada.” - 24 Hours

Greetings music fans.

RC tells me The Belvedere Half Court is an album about his old apartment building – The Belvedere Court at 10th and Main here in beautiful uptown East Vancouver. He says it’s kind of a musical love letter to the b-class heritage building that inspired so much of this music.

I told him such statements make him sound like a mary.

Ah, concept albums… Back in my day those were all the rage. However, back in my day people also regularly stuck acid under their eyelids. So yeah, we’ll see what people think.

Greetings music fans.

Here is a little project that RC and Mossy are working on long distance. RC is recording the songs in Vancouver then sending the tracks to Mossy in Rockford, Illinois for him to add a little ambiance. They want to do a 5-6 song ep, then release it digitally. Then they want to do two more. Fine by me. Those are my kind of recording sessions: cheap like borscht. And the whole long distance, virtual recording angle will probably be easy to sell. Like Streisand and Diamond on ‘You Don’t Bring Me Flowers’. Except Mossy and RC project more love.

Listen while you read…
SONG: Whopper Jr.…

The third release from this ever-evolving Vancouver collective, Brand New Golden Oldies is Kingsway singer/songwriter RC Joseph’s most rock ‘n’ roll endeavor to date. Featuring support from Canadian indie darlings Counterrevolutionaries as well as guest appearances from trumpeter Shaun Brodie (New Pornographers, The Great Outdoors, Hayden) and percussionist Steven Wegelin (Radiogram, The Great Outdoors), Brand New Golden Oldies is reminiscent of rock ‘n’ roll in simpler times, revisiting the upbeat swing of early Neil Young, the dark transcendence of CCR, and the grittier moments of Roy Orbison. Recorded at East Van Eden Studios, produced by RC Joseph and Adam Nation, mixed by the Mooncussers’ Colin Funk, and mastered at Profile Studios by prolific hit-maker Chôn (Ox, The Be Good Tanyas), Brand New Golden Oldies is yet another bright light on DDG Records’ luminescent coastline of extraordinary Canadian music.

“With a debut that was perhaps one of the best in recent Canadian indie history, it seems unlikely that Kingsway could continue to get better with each release, but somehow they do. Brand New Golden Oldies is Kingsway’s finest work yet… RC Joseph might just be the best lyricist in Canada.” – 24 Hours
